Port Isabel: James E. Myers, Jr. 87 of Port Isabel went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. James is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Maxine of Port Isabel; 2 daughters, Mary Beck of Kansas City and Elizabeth Keith of Wichita, KS; 2 sons, John R. Myers and Joseph W. Myers both of Wichita, KS; grandsons, David Beck. II, Nathan Beck, Devin Keith, Garrett Keith, John R. Myers, Jr. and Christopher Myers all of Kansas; a granddaughter, Emily Gilbirds Hartung of Kansas; a great grandson, Kyle Matthew Myers of Kansas; also a niece, Betty Shoudt of Pennsylvania. and nephew, Robert Myers of Connecticut. He is preceded in death by his son, James E. Myers III, his daughter, Barbara Myers; and 2 grandchildren, Veronica Beck and Joseph Winston Beck; his parents, James and Emily Myers of Omaha, NE. He received degrees from Iowa State University in Chemistry and Engineering; and Advanced Degrees from Wichita State University in Geology and Chemistry. He did his Doctoral work in Kansas State University in Nuclear Engineering. He also attended the University of Pennsylvania. He was married to his loving wife, Maxine, on December 20, 1947; they have 6 children, 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. During World War II he was conscripted to become a Member of the Manhattan Project engaged in Atomic Research. He was Partner and Manager of the Wichita Chemical and Testing Laboratories for 20 years in Wichita, KS. He also taught Geology at Wichita State University for 12 years and was the Energy Coordinator for the City of Wichita during the Energy Crisis and held the position for 12 years. James was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus he was also a member of Lions International for many years and attained the positions of District Governor and International Counselor. James and Maxine decided to retire in Port Isabel in 1984. He assisted the City of Port Isabel in two expansions of the Port Isabel Public Library and was active in the organization for many years. He was instrumental in obtaining Grants for the purchase of the Champion Bldg. for use as a Museum and later purchasing the bank bldg. for museum expansion. He served as Interim City Manager of Port Isabel; he was elected as a City Commissioner for Port Isabel and served as Mayor Pro-tem. Visitation will be held on Friday August 8, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 705 S. Longoria St. in Port Isabel. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. August 09, 2008 at Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church in Port Isabel with Father Gerry Barrett officiating. Cremation will follow to Sacred Park Crematorium. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send memorial donations to Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church, 705 S.
