George Henry Jacobs, a musician and journalist whose career carried him from the Rio Grande Valley to the DFW area, died Sunday, Dec. 2, at his residence in the northern Fort Worth suburb of Trophy Club, TX. He was 30. A Valley native, George attended San Benito schools and participated in the band programs at Miller Jordan Middle School and San Benito High School, where he excelled as a trombone player in wind ensemble and as a guitarrón player for the Mariachi band. George also earned numerous accolades and recognition, which include but are not limited to Solo & Ensemble medals. He was also a member of SBHS marching bands that - for three consecutive years - received Division 1 ratings at the Pigskin Jubilee Marching Band Contest. Music became an integral part of George's life, playing the bass and keyboards as a member of 512 Madrid, a popular local band whose members all hailed from San Benito. George earned associates and bachelor degrees in software engineering from the University of Phoenix. His aspirations led him to a career in journalism, covering stories ranging from news to sports as a freelance writer for the San Benito News and later as a staff reporter for the Port Isabel-South Padre Press. He eventually moved to the Dallas area, where he continued to hone his musical skills and worked in the hotel industry. George is preceded in death by his father, Fred Jacobs, and uncle, Charles Jacobs. He is survived by his sibling Nancy (Juan) Ordaz, aunts Jennifer Jacobs and Linda (Frank) Garza, and mother Mary Jacobs. A memorial service will be held for George at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 8, at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, located at 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd. in San Benito.
