Ricardo Robles Rodriguez, known affectionately as "La Brocha," passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the age of 84, in Harlingen, Texas. Ricardo was born on May 5, 1940, in Rancho San Jose to Manuela Robles Rodriguez and Julian Rodriguez. Ricardo married Oralia “Laya” Huerta Rodriguez, his high school sweetheart on August 12, 1960, and celebrated 64 years of marriage. Ricardo and Laya had 11 children: Ricardo "Rick" Rodriguez (Gail Crenshaw Rodriguez), Cristela "Cris" Leticia Rodriguez-Horn (Larry Charles Horn), Melinda Rodriguez, Ramiro "Bam Bam" Rodriguez (Vanessa Uresti Rodriguez), Melisa Rodriguez Elrod (Robert Elrod), Valerio "Val" Rodriguez (Camille Sanders Rodriguez), Melinda Nunez (Aaron Nunez), Idalia Rodriguez (Moe Jim Sanchez), Lolita Rodriguez, Rodrigo "Roddy" Abram Rodriguez, Randie Rodriguez-Tubens (David Anthony Tubens). Ricardo was preceded in death by his parents Julian and Manuela Rodriguez, his first-born son Rick Rodriguez, daughter, baby Melinda Rodriguez, brothers, Julian Rodriguez, and Raul Rodriguez, and sister, Evangelina Rodriguez Gil. Ricardo served his country in the US Army from 1964 to 1966 when he was honorably discharged. He worked for KGBT as a radio news announcer and Tejano DJ. He loved playing people’s requests and dedications. Ricardo was a pioneer in installing TV cable for Cablevision when cable was introduced to the Rio Grande Valley. Ricardo served his community as City Commissioner of San Benito from 1974 to 1976. He was all about serving others and received great joy in doing for his community. Ricardo lived a full and vibrant life serving God. In 1981 Ricardo surrendered his life to God and he served as Pastor of Templo Rosa De Saron where he prepared many disciples of God. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Laya, the 9 surviving children, Cris, Ramiro, Melisa, Val, Melinda, Idalia, Lolita, Randie, Rodrigo, 22 grandchildren and approximately 14 great grandchildren. Ricardo will be deeply missed by his surviving siblings, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family, friends, and all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with Military Honors at 6:00 p.m. and Discussion to be held at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, TX with cremation to follow in accordance with his wishes.
