Obituary of Eliazar Gregorio Longoria

Please share a memory of Eliazar to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Eliazar Gregorio Longoria, 95, of San Benito, Texas passed away on Monday, March 28, 2022. Born in Harlingen, he went to elementary school at Alamo Elementary. At age 17, while in his senior year in high school, he and a group of close friends volunteered for the service during World War II. He served in the Navy, aboard a submarine tender – a ship that supplied and serviced the submarines in the Pacific. When he returned, he received his high school diploma and started his studies as an electrician. His father’s poor health required Eliazar to quit his studies and work full time. He worked for over 35 years in the selling of electrical and plumbing supplies. He also was involved with church activities before and after he married. He and his wife, Elva, were very active at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Benito, teaching CCD, sponsoring CYO, and helping in the annual church festivals. He helped Elva set up her beauty shop business, and he became the jack of all trades, from bookkeeping for her shop to maintaining the building of apartments that also held her beauty shop. He cooked, cleaned, ironed frilly blouses for his 3 girls, Dee Dee, Gigi, Trizzie, and taught them to drive. Father to three very active girls in school, he helped with PTO projects and floats, school projects, and chaperoning numerous school and church youth activities, He also was “Lal” to his nieces and nephews and their friends. Grandpa Lal was a patient and soft-spoken man who was always there for his family, especially when Grandma Elva was in the wheelchair. He patiently got her to her appointments and carried her in and out of her wheelchair, helped her with her beauty routines, and quietly remained her right hand man, until her passing. He spent the next 10 years missing her. Grandpa Lal could be said that he was a determined man, whose values he passed on to his daughters and was honored and loved by his family, immediate and extended. The family is grateful to Mrs. A. Coronado, who stayed overnight and made him his favorite breakfast; to Brisa Martinez and Vicenta Arteaga, who for the past four years took care of him even at the nursing home; the VA home-team led by Amy Alaniz; the many dedicated nurses and CNA’s staff of Harlingen Nursing and Rehabilitation, who would constantly check in on him; and Greater Valley Hospice, who guided the family in his last days, A special thanks to the memory of Juan Lucio, a nephew-in-law who did everything possible for Grandpa Lal to receive help from the different Veterans groups. And to the many friends and neighbors, who made it possible for Lal to live independently as long as he did in his own home, the family thanks you for your support.
