Obituary of Casimiro Z. Barrera

Casimiro Z. Barrera, 66, a lifelong resident Port Isabel, Texas passed away Thursday night October 14, 2021. He was born on September 4, 1955 and the sixth child of Andres and Beatriz Barrera. Casimiro, widely known as “The Comet”, where he played as a Running Back in 1972-1974 for the Mighty Tarpons. One of his greatest accomplishments was in 1974 rushing over 1000 yards in 10 games and helped lead the Mighty Tarpons to their first District Championship for Port Isabel since 1952. Following his graduation in 1975, He enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his time in Germany. He loved fishing, family barbecues, and Christmas time with his loved ones. He is preceded in death by his father: Andres Ramon Barrera, mother: Beatriz Zuniga Barrera, brothers: Fidel Z. Barrera and Alberto Z. Barrera. He is survived by his loving wife: Hortencia V. Barrera, children: Jo Anna M. Valdez, (Ernesto Nava), Crystal Marie Barrera (Christine Saucedo), Mercedez Dalzee Barrera, Casimiro (Iris Marie Johnson) Barrera Jr., and Candace L. (Alfredo) Davalos, siblings: Andres Z. Barrera (Belma), Margarita Z Szpak (Bill), Amelia Z. Polk, and Reynaldo Z. Barrera, grandchildren: Ernesto Nava Jr, Alexia N. Acosta, Luis G. Acosta Jr, Daniel E. Cisneros Jr, Christopher J. Acosta, Danity A. Cisneros, Royce A. Jett Barrera, Mia N. Barrera, Maxlynn D. Barrera, Alejabdro J. Nava, Zachary Davalos, and Kaleb Davalos. Visitation will be held on Wednesday October 20, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday October 21, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 705 S Longoria St, Port Isabel, Texas with interment to follow at Port Isabel City Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by V.F.W. Post 2035 of Brownsville, Texas. Honored to serve as Pallbearers are: Casimiro Barrera, Jr., Ernesto S. Nava, Luis G. Acosta, Jr., Alberto Barrera, Julio Barrera and Andres Barrera. Honorary Pallbearers are: Antonio Valdez, Jr., Venustiano Alfredo Valdez, Manuel G. Valdez, Arturo Garcia, and Sandalio Alaniz. All individuals are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines by socially distancing a minimum space of 6 feet apart and must wear face covers or masks.
