Obituary of Rebecca Ellen RuBane

Rebecca Ellen RuBane, 49 of Laguna Vista, Texas, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019, in Harlingen, Texas.

Rebecca Ellen RuBane was born March 18, 1970 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and grew up in Garland, Texas. She graduated from South Garland High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oklahoma, and later a Juris Doctorate from Oklahoma City University. Directly after law school Rebecca moved to the Rio Grande Valley for a position in the Cameron County District Attorney’s office. She served there for many years, later switching to solo practice as a criminal defense attorney. She had many friends among attorneys and local law enforcement agencies throughout the Valley, who will remember her for her keen sense of humor, loving heart, and fierce dedication to the law. 

From an early age, Rebecca developed a love of horses and horseback riding, keeping and riding horses in high school and for many years here in the Valley. She was involved in calf roping and even after health issues stopped her from riding she loved to spend time at the stables with her horses and at the arena with friends in the riding community. 

Rebecca was preceded in death by her grandparents Clyde and Bengie Ballenger, of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Francis and Elaine RuBane, of Burlingame, California. 

She is survived by her parents, Frank and Janis RuBane of Wichita Falls, Texas, and brother Tom RuBane of Denver, Colorado. 

Visitation will begin Sunday, September 15, 2019, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas.

A funeral service will be held at a later date at Hayes Funeral Home, 117 E. Noble Ave., Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Honorary pallbearers are John Blaylock, Gabriela Garcia, Claudine O’Carroll, Victor Ramirez, and Rebecca Salazar.
