Port Isabel, Texas- Mary Frances Wilson left her mortal existence on December 9, 2011 to be in the presence of the Lord. Miss Mary F. Smiegel was born in 1918 in Wyandotte Michigan. This survivor overcame the twin misfortunes of a low birth weight of 3 ½ pounds and the Spanish Flu epidemic which swept the nation in 1918. Upon graduating from Wyandotte Roosevelt High School, she worked in New York City as a professional dance. Mary later returned to her hometown and worked as a secretary for the Penn Salt Corp. In 1942, she married her long time sweetheart Andrew Wilson, who served in the U.S. Army Air Force. They traveled across the country as his duty stations changed, only being separated when Andrew was assigned to the 20th Air Force in Guam. After the war ended, they eventually settled in his hometown, Trenton, Michigan and raised a family. Andrew retired from Great Lakes Steel in 1977. A few years later they moved to Port Isabel. Mary was very serious about her faith. She was an active member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She worked for years as a C.C.D. instructor and sang in the choir. Mary is survived by her husband Andrew of 69 years; her sons are Jeffrey and Christopher of Port Isabel, John of Trenton, Michigan, and Steven, who lives in Flagstaff, Arizona with her daughter-in-law Terri, and grandsons Sean and Eric.
