Bayview,Tx: Selma "Toots" Cecelia Mahurin, 98, of the Bayview/South Padre Island area went to see her Lord & Savior on October 25, 2011 at the Harlingen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was surrounded by family members who were there to love and comfort her in her final hours. Toots was born in South Bend, IN July 18, 1913 to Earl & Ruby Long. Earl & Ruby had 2 other children; Norland E Long (deceased) and Barbara E Wells (Jr.) of Port Isabel. She graduated from Port Isabel High School in 1931. In 1932 Toots married Sherman "Capt. Wiley" Mahurin (deceased). Toots and Capt Wiley had 5 children. Before Capt Wiley's death, the couple had been married 75 years. Toots & Capt Wiley had 22 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews, many from this area, TX, LA , MN and MO. Toots was one of the first 2 graduates of Port Isabel High School in 1931. She received recognition for this honor many times from the school district throughout the years. The other graduate Ethel Mahurin ended up being her sister in law a year later. Toots and her daughter Joy were the first two generation graduates from Port Isabel high school also. Since then, many of Toot's grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews have also graduated from Port Isabel. Toots was very active in community with many other civic leadership roles, including PTA, South Texas Hospital and especially at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Toots and husband Capt Wiley opened Captain Wiley's Marina on South Padre Island in 1962 where they were successful in operating a marina and charter boat fishing service. Toots loved to watch the sunset each evening when the day was over with her family and many friends that she came to know throughout the years of owning the marina. Toots and Capt Wiley sold the marina in 1979 and moved out to Bayview on a ranch living close to their son Jack. In 1980 when Hurricane Allen came through, the original building that was "Capt Wiley's" was destroyed and was rebuilt as Fisherman's Wharf which still stands there today. Toots is survived by her children Selma Thornton of Bayview, Jack Mahurin (Judy) of Bayview, and Carol Thornton of Harlingen. She is also survived by her sister Barbara Wells of Port Isabel. She was preceded in death by daughter Joy Patricia Ray (Jerry), Wiley "Laddie" Earl Mahurin (Nelda) of Gonzales, LA, and a grandson Jack D Mahurin. We are rejoicing in the knowledge that Grandma and Granddad are finally back together again. We can see him messing with her and her saying "Oh Wiley" and then they kiss so tenderly like they always did. Our grandparents loved to kiss. It is as it should be. Thank you God. Memorial Service to be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Port Isabel at 10am, Saturday, November 5th. The ashes of Toots and Capt Wiley will be merged together and released at sunset in the bay near Captain Wiley's Marina. Anyone wishing to attend the release of the ashes needs to meet at Laguna Bobs at 5 pm where we will board and go out into the bay for a sunset service.
