Obituary of Raul "Roy" Moreno

Raul “Roy” Moreno, 55, of San Benito, entered into heavens kingdom Thursday, December 17, 2015 in Harlingen, Texas. Roy a long life resident of San Benito, was born July 3, 1960 to Enrique Davila Moreno II and Irma Santos Hinojosa Moreno. He attended school in San Benito up until he joined the United States Army in 1978. His lengthy military career included tours from Germany to Operation Enduring Freedom where he had many achievements from being a member of the combined joint task force -76 Quick Reaction Force which included protection of VIP’s, recovery of downed air craft and personnel, mountain high altitude rescue, and reinforcing units in contact. These contributions helped ensure Operation Enduring Freedom VI was a great success. SGT Moreno was responsible for performing Sergeant of the Guard duties for the Perimeter Security of Bagram Airfield (BAF). He helped provide force protection for over 10,000 U.S. and Coalition personnel in BAF and safeguarded a large number of aircraft and other pieces of vital equipment. SGT Moreno prevented infiltrations to the base from unauthorized personnel, by conduction show of force and diligently monitoring for any suspicious activity. He also provided protection patrols in Kabul and security to the presidential compound during the month of August 2005. He conducted over ten presence patrols in Kabul’s main district, surrounding the presidential palace in order to prevent any criminal activities or terrorist acts during the provincial election of Afghanistan. His combat patrolling proficiency and vehicle maintenance efforts directly contributed to the success of QRF. Moreno assumed the responsibilities of Squad Leader with remarkable success. He was responsible for the training, accountability of equipment of eight soldiers. His training and mentoring skills helped the noninfantry Soldiers assigned to 3D platoon to quickly grasp and become proficient in battle drills there by meeting the requirement to become qualified as a member of the QRF. SGT Moreno contributed greatly to the War on Terrorism. For exceptionally meritorious service while serving as a Squad Leader with Alpha Company, 3d Battalion, 141st Infantry, as a member of the Quick Reaction Force and the Bagram Airfield Security Team in support of Operation Enduring Freedom VI. His performance of duty reflects great credit upon him, Task Force Eagle, and the United States Central Command. He is survived by his loving wife, Hilda Pena; sons: Raul Delfino Moreno II, and Ivan Joseph Moreno, Christopher A. Chavera; Daughters: Angelina C. Chavera and Rose Marie Chavera; seven grandsons and two granddaughters; siblings: Rita (Robert) Arce, Freer, Texas, Enrique Moreno III, Sylvia (David Hugo) Garcia, Celia M. Gonzalez, and Arnoldo Jesus Moreno, all of San Benito; nieces: Ann-Janette Guerra, Rox-Anne Gonzalez, Sandra, Monica and Laura Moreno, Erika Echartea, Teddy Gonzalez, Victoria Ray Moreno; nephews: Roberto Arce, Enrique Moreno IV, David Hugo, Daniel Hector Garcia, Arnoldo Jesus Moreno II, Jacob Moreno and Raul Enrique Moreno. Pallbearers will be: Arnoldo Moreno, Raul Moreno II, Enrique Moreno IV, Arnoldo Moreno Jr., David Hugo Garcia II, Daniel Hector Garcia, Max Echartea and Roberto Arce Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be: Jacob Alexander Moreno, Joey M. Guerra, Daniel Guajardo and Raul Enrique Moreno. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 20, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m., and a chapel service held at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 21, 2015 with departure from Thomae Garza Funeral Home at 9:00 a.m. for a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 South Inspiration Road, Mission, TX 78572, with military honors.
