Rogerio “Roy” Zuniga Sr., 54, of San Benito, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at his residence. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust… Born on December 26, 1960 in San Benito, Texas and raised in Rio Hondo, Texas. Roy graduated from Rio Hondo High School in 1978. He married the love of his life, Guadalupe “Lupe” Betancourt and was father of 5 children and countless other who found a welcoming home and delicious food. Farming and animals were his passion. He drove combines and pickers in the summer and worked the lands during the season. On the weekends when he wasn’t barbequing or “burning it” as he liked to call it, he was at the horse races. Every Wednesday, he and his buddy Remi carried on the BBQ Wednesday tradition, where they coked for the family as they arrived home from work. All were invited, especially those adopted by our family. Roy was known by his family as, “hijo del maiz” because that was his favorite saying and “welo” by his grandchildren. Roy was the life of the party, dancing and joking with everyone. Roy never met a stranger and loved his farming buddies, Hector Garza, Jesus “Chuy” Alfaro, and his compardre Joe Galvan. Family was most important to him and his day began by coming to his mom’s house to drink coffee with her. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Manuel and Agustina Padilla and paternal grandparents, Hermerejildo and Perfecta Zuniga, his father, Dionicio Zuniga Sr., and his eldest son, Rogerio “Lil Roy” Zuniga Jr. Rogerio is survived by his loving wife, Lupita, his sons, Rene (Crystal), Roberto (Beatrize), Alfredo (Patty) and daughters, Roxanne (Rudy), and Rosie, his mother Julia and sisters Irma Gonzalez (Lorenzo), Alma Villarreal (Rick), Luisa (Rudy) Montemayor, and Lisa Zuniga. His brothers: Nicho (Cynthia), Ricky, David (Imelda) and Remijio Trevino. He had 5 grandchildren: Olga, Rebekah, Roy Zuniga, Leslie Zuniga, Ryeanne Garza and numerous nieces and nephews who adored and loved their Tio Roy. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a holy rosary at 7:00 p.m., at Thomae Garza Funeral Home.
