Obituary of Omar Perera

Port Isabel, Texas: Omar Escolastico Perera, 59, called O.P. by his family, of Port Isabel passed away on August 7, 2010 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, surrounded by his loving family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alejo & Aurelia Perera; and his sister, Marina Hulse. Omar was born on Feb. 10, 1951 in Stann Creek, Belize. He graduated from Lynam Agricultural College in 1969 in Stann Creek. He then moved to New Orleans and graduated from Delgado Trade School & Hammond College while working on a barge offshore. When his father became ill in 1979 he went back to Belize to work at the Sugar Cane Factory where he then met his future wife Soli. Six months later, Soli & Omar married on Dec. 8, 1979; They then moved to South Padre Island where he managed Gulf Point Properties under Island Services where he continued to work for 32 years as property manager and realtor. He acquired his real estate license on Sept. 30, 1981. They've resided in Port Isabel since 1985 raising their two sons, Omar & Julian. He was active in the City Planning and Zoning Commission of Port Isabel and an active member on the P.I. Community Center Project. He is a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and was very involved in his boys' little league teams as a coach in the Laguna Madre Area. Omar had a tremendous love for music, the outdoors, travel, and cooking for his extended family & friends. His doors were always open to anyone and he was always willing to give good advice and help others. Omar is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Soli G. Perera; his sons, Omar & Julian Perera; siblings, Francisca (Roy) Anderson, Julian (Ena) Perera, Delia (+ Jamie, deceased) Usher, Isabel (Orlando) Orio, Isidra (Mike) Hancock, Ena (Santiago) Gonzalez, & Maria (Bob Jr.) Pinkerton; and his brother in law, Stanley Hulse; many nephews, nieces, Vega & Perera cousins, Gonzalez in-laws, and many other relatives that he was very close to. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church located at 705 South Longoria St. in Port Isabel. Visitation will continue of Thursday, August 12, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with the Mass of Resurrection to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church with Father Gerry Barrett officiating. Interment will follow to Port Isabel City Cemetery. Pallbearers, Bryan Pinkerton, Adam Hancock, Ian Usher, Adrian Hulse, Roy Perera, Santiago (Santi) Gonzalez, Stephen Perera, Bruce Perera, & Carlos Cervantes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Omar E. Perera to the Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 705 S.
