Obituary of Alonzo Rodriguez

Brownsville, Texas: Alonzo Rodriguez, 78, beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend entered into the glory of his eternal life on Friday, June 18, 2010, at Valley Baptist Medical Center I Brownsville, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his son, Joe A. Rodriguez; his parents, Alfredo and Juanita Rodriguez; brothers, Arturo Rodriguez and Joe Rodriguez; sisters, Elida Yanez, Maria Perales, Ninfa Guzman, and Juanita Gonzalez. Alonzo was born and raised in Brownsville; and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church; he was also a member of the American Legion Post 43. While serving in the U.S. Army in 1953, he was a middleweight boxer stationed in Germany. He proudly served his country during the Korean War. After working as a Crane Operator and Maintenance Supervisor at Valley Ready Mix/Varmicon Ind. for 40 years, he retired in 1995. He spent the last 15 years doing what he loved best. Those who knew Alonzo know that he lived life to the fullest and dedicated himself to his wife and children. He enjoyed BBQs on Sunday and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening, building and carpentry, cooking his famous award-winning beans a la charra and family gatherings. He had a great sense of humor and positive outlook on life and death. He never missed an opportunity to visit the Vermillion with his wife, compadres, and friends for nachos and a pitcher of beer. Left behind on this earth to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 55 years, Lydia Rodriguez; four daughters, Diana (Mario) Cisneros, Linda (Romeo) Montalvo, Alice (Conrad) Bodden, and Elizabeth (Charlie) Sanchez; eleven grandchildren, Jose Alfredo, Jr., Sarah and Cyndi Rodriguez; Mario Alonzo, Dolly and Omar Cisneros; Julieta Montalvo; Nicolas, Andres and Rafael Bodden; and Steven Daniel Solis, Jr.; three sisters, Minerva Cordoba (Michigan), Margarita Gonzalez (San Antonio), and Zoila Rodriguez (Brownsville); four brothers, Alfredo Rodriguez (Houston), Emilio Rodriguez, Robert Rodriguez and Carlos Rodriguez (Brownsville). Pallbearers will be Mario Cisneros, Romeo Montalvo, Conrad Bodden, Juan Carlos Sanchez, Joey Rodriguez, Mario A. Cisneros, Omar Cisneros, Jaime Garcia and Juan Magallanes. Honorary Pallbearers will be Steven D. Solis, Jr., Nico Bodden, Andres Bodden, Rafael Bodden, Alfredo Rodriguez, Emilio Rodriguez, Robert Rodriguez and Carlos Rodriguez. Visitation will begin on Monday, June 21, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito; and continue from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Saint Mary's Catholic Church located at 1914 Barnard Rd. in Brownsville. Mass of Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 9:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Committal services will follow to Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Brownsville. Military Honors will be conducted at the graveside by the American Legion Post 43 Honor Guard of Brownsville. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the ICU doctors, Dr. Roberto Robles, Dr. Karen Brooks, Dr. Lorenzo Pelly and Dr. Jairo Rodriguez, and the nurses and staff at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville.
