Pedro (Pete) Benavides, of Harlingen, Texas, passed away on March 12, 2024, surrounded by close family. His passing is deeply felt, and his family is profoundly saddened. Pete was born on January 25, 1950, in San Benito, Texas to Luis Benavides, Sr. and Lily Garcia Benavides. He was one of eleven children: Hector Benavides+ (Maria Luisa), Herminia Jimenez+ (Roberto+), Maria Elena Diaz+ (Felipe+), Maria Luisa Gonzalez+ (Pete+), Josefina Gutierrez+ (Luis+), Clara Lopez (Tony+), Sara Camacho + (Juan+), Luis Benavides Jr. (Janie), Armandina Luna (Rene), and Oralia Benavides (Victor Bustos+). He attended and graduated from San Benito High School and was a long-distance truck driver for many years and a very talented Tejano singer and musician. Pete married San Juanita (Janie) Benavides on January 9, 1993, and remained her dedicated and loving husband until his last breath. He was a caring and loving father to Nora Garcia (Rene) and Peter Benavides (Jacqueline), and a kind and friendly stepfather to Hector Cavazos (Ivanne) and Henry Cavazos (Olivia). He cherished spending time with his family, whether it was grilling and barbecuing, watching the Dallas Cowboys play football, or singing and playing Tejano music. He is survived by his wife Janie Benavides, children Nora Garcia, Peter Benavides, Hector Cavazos, and Henry Cavazos, siblings Clara Lopez, Luis Benavides Jr., Armandina Luna, and Oralia Bustos, grandchildren Cristian Garcia (Melanie), Cameron Garcia, Madeleine Benavides, Hannah Cavazos, Megan Cavazos, Alexis Cavazos (Michaela Mills), Jacob Cavazos, Ryan Cavazos, Samantha Jackson, and Sabrina Saldivar , great grandchildren Zaydn Gael Garcia, Exodus Cavazos, Jayden Flores, Noah Flores, Avilynn Araiza, and Cynthia Reyes. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Luis Sr. and Lily, and his siblings Hector, Herminia, Maria Elena, Maria Luisa, Josefina, and Sara. His departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others who knew him. The family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, TX, 78586. The Funeral Mass will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 351 S. Bowie St., San Benito, Texas, 78586 followed by burial service at Mont Meta Memorial Park, 26170 State Highway 345, San Benito, Texas 78586. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Cristian Rene Garcia, Cameron Michael Garcia, Jacob Cavazos, Ryan Cavazos, Hector Cavazos, and Henry Cavazos. Pete will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
