Obituary of Irene Treviño Cantu

Please share a memory of Irene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Irene Treviño Cantu, 82, of San Benito, Texas, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023, at her residence surrounded by loved ones. She shared her ranch with her family and enjoyed tending to her plants. Her ranch was considered the “party house” where she hosted family reunions. Irene loved her favorite football teams, the San Benito Greyhounds, and the Dallas Cowboys. After graduating from San Benito High School, she got married and started her family. She was proud of her family lineage being a descendent of the Treviño family and the direct descendent of Don Jose Esparza of El Ranchito. His legacy of education, religion, family, and fun were reflected in her everyday life and values. She was a devoted Catholic having attended St. Benedict’s Catholic Church the majority of her adult life. Her words,” You always dress your best for church”. Her activities for fun were Bingo and the “maquinitas”. She loved her immediate and extended family tremendously and they loved her back. Irene is preceded in death by her mother, Natalia Esparza Treviño, her father Alfredo P. Treviño Sr., siblings Minerva Patricia Powers, Alfredo Treviño Jr., Sylvia Carter, Porfirio Treviño, Ana Maria Treviño, and Arnoldito Treviño. Her heart was broken with the loss of members of her immediate family. Preceded in death by husband Hector Ramirez Cantu, her daughters Natalie Marie Cantu and Estela Patricia Cantu, her grandson Nicolaz Sosa, great-granddaughter Harely Hinrichs, stepson Greg Keller, and stepson Hector Cantu Jr. Left to cherish her memory are her children Lorraine SC Hinrichs, Lorina Sosa-Reed (Alberto Hernandez), Joe Guillermo Sosa III (Sheila Sosa), George Guillermo Sosa (Jennifer Donahue Sosa), step children; Karla Keller, Jeannette Camarena, Nora Cantu, and Abigail Cantu, sisters; Nellie Treviño and Mary Jane Magaña (Luis) and brothers; Cesar Treviño (Arcelia), George Treviño (Margo), Arnold Treviño (Merly), and Orlando Treviño, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will miss her dearly. The family expresses their deepest appreciation to mom’s beloved home health providers Odalis of Houston and Maria “Odalis” Montemayor of San Benito, for the years of tender care. We would also like to thank the musicians, Raul Treviño and family, Velma De Los Santos, Juan Tovar, Patsy, and Henry Sanchez for the conduction of the rosary.
