Obituary of Elvira Wood Zuñiga

Please share a memory of Elvira to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Elvira Wood Zuñiga, 92, of Port Isabel, TX, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at her home. Elvira was one of the last of a group of Shrimpers Families that immigrated to Port Isabel in the 1960’s. She dedicated her life to her husband, her children, extended family and friends. She was a devoted member of Our Lady Star of The Sea Catholic Church in Port Isabel, TX. Every once in a while, a person like Elvira comes into your life that deepens your understanding of love and giving. She unselfishly gave of herself to all, always serving and being the last to be served. A respected member of her community known for telling it the way it was or should be. Politicians would avoid her because they knew they were going to get an earful. The alpha male shrimpers that would visit the family would thread lightly in her presence out of respect for the great woman she was. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, mami, grandma, great-grandma, Doña Elvira, and Mrs. Zuñiga for making us better people by being a part of your life. She is preceded in death by her husband Rafael Zuñiga; daughter, Carmen Zuñiga; son, Julio Zuñiga; stepson, Oscar Bodden; father, William Wood; mother, Carmen Rodriguez Tejada; sister, Alicia Wood Bruner; and brothers, Willie Wood, Jose Wood, Antonio Wood, and Julio Wood. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Rafael (Karen), Luis, Jose (Linda), Wilfredo and Jorge; daughter-in-law-Martha Bodden; grandchildren- Zuniga’s- Chelsea, Marisa, Joey, Rachel, Alexandra, Danielle, Rafael III, and Cassidy; Bodden’s-Oscar Lee, Analdo, Denisa, Sharla and Marcie.
