Obituary of Maria Cantu

Los Indios- Maria Aurora Marichalar Cantu, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at the age of 85. She was born on February 28, 1921 to Modesto Marichalar and Guadalupe Godoy in Brownsville, Texas. She was the eldest of a family of 16 children. Aurora, better known to her children as Momma Bear and to her grandchildren, whom she loved and adored dearly, as Nana, enjoyed sewing, cooking and quilting. She always enjoyed doing things for her children, especially during the holidays. She was never tired of surprising us with handmade goods, such as bears, blankets, travel bags, and so many other memories that will be cherished forever. She was preceded in death by her husband, Angel Cantu Sr., her parents; Modest Marichalar and Guadalupe Godoy. Aurora is survived by her 8 children, Dora (Ovidio) Gonzalez; Alberto (Wilda) Cantu; Angel (Rachel) Cantu, Jr.; Rose (Hector) Garza; Art Cantu; Anna (Raul) Villarreal, Jr.; Chubby Cantu; and Arnoldo (Maggie) Cantu; Grandchildren, Ovidio Jr., Robert, and Ana Beth Gonzalez; Lino, Eduardo, and Missy Cantu; Rolando and Margie Cantu; Patricia, Javier, Trena, and Roseanne Garza; Kimberly, Kelly, Katie, Michael, Christopher, Samantha and Ernie Cantu; Raul "Tinker", Ron, and Randy Villarreal; Charles and Robert Cantu; and 32 great-grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Friday, February 23, 2007 from 12 Noon to 9:00 P.M. with a Rosary at 7:00 P.M. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Saturday February 24, 2007 at 12:30 P.M. at St Benedict Catholic Church in San Benito. Interment will follow to Gomez Cemetery in Los Indios, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Angel Cantu, Sr. Mrs. Cantu's pallbearers will be her grandsons, Rolando Cantu, Raul "Tinker" Villarreal, Hector Xavier Garza, Eduardo Cantu, Charles Cantu, and Christopher Cantu; also serving as Honorary pallbearers will be Ovidio and Robert Gonzalez; Lino Cantu; Micheal Cantu; Ron and Randy Villarreal; Robert Glenn Cantu; and Ernie Cantu.
