Obituary of Porfirio Vega

Port Isabel, TX - Porfirio B. Vega went to be with the lord on June 12, 2008 after a lengthy illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Isabel B. Vega, his daughter, Gina Vega Valenzuela, and a brother, Eliseo B. "Cheo" (Olga) Vega. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou Vega, of Port Isabel, his son, Juan, "Johnny" Vega (Dora), of Brownsville, two daughters Angie Vega Cruz (Manuel), and Evelyn, "Lyn" Saldivar (Joe) of Port Isabel. His pride and joy were his seven grandchildren, George (Ashley Garcia)Hernandez, Matthew Hernandez, Miranda and Angela Cruz, Tiffany and Andrew Saldivar all of Port Isabel and Monica Garza of Brownsville. Three sisters, Maria Vega Ochoa (+Benito Ochoa), Sophia Carrillo (+Rodolfo Carrillo), and Beatriz Zapata (Juan) of Port Isabel and one brother, Joe Añorga (+Daisy Añorga) of DeerPark, Texas. Also numerous Nephews, Nieces, and other relatives. Porfirio "Pilo" Vega was a lifelong resident of Port Isabel and a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A loyal servant to the community Pilo accomplished many great things. He served as a volunteer fire fighter for over 25 years only leaving after an accident that caused him to retire. He also served on the board of the Laguna Madre Water District for over 16 years. Enjoying baseball, he coached little league for over 13 years, as well as serving on the Little League Board. An avid card player he met weekly for card games with his friends, something he looked forward to. The family would like to give special thanks to all his card buddies for their generous support and the staff and nurses of Valley Baptist Medical Center. As well as all family and friends who were there for them through these hard times. Visitations will be held Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 705 S. Longoria St. in Port Isabel from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with a Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. Cremation will follow to Sacred Park Crematorium. Pallbearers will be Bennie Ochoa III, Juan Zapata, Greg Ruiz, Cary Causey, Gonzalo Holland, Vidal "Billy" Holland, George Hernandez, and Matthew Hernandez. Honorary pall bearers are Ray Ramon, Joe Rivera, Gaspar Bodden, Frank Mata, Bill Jefferies, and Alfredo "Goodmorning" Villarreal. In lieu of flowers memorial can be made in memory of Porfirio B. Vega to Laguna Madre Little League, P.O. Box 1762, Port Isabel, Texas 78578 or Port Isabel Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 607, Port Isabel, Texas 78578.
