Obituary of Sara Abrego Galarza

Please share a memory of Sara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sara Abrego Galarza, 78, of San Benito, Texas passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Sara, Sarita, Mrs. Galarza, sis, mom, grandma, and grandmama, as known by her family, friends, and school district personnel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was an educator of over 45 years for the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District (SBCISD), most of those years were at La Encantada Elementary School in El Ranchito as a teacher and a principal, which was the same school she attended as a little girl. She cared for the lives of children and teachers. Mrs. Galarza was strict, but fair; an advocate for the best educational resources for the kids from the “rancho”, and although she had a strong personality, she saw the best in all students and wanted nothing but the best for her staff and teachers. She was a well-known administrator in SBCISD and very passionate about education, even offering words of wisdom to those going into the field of education. Sara grew up in a family of migrant workers who lived near the resacas near Rice Tract Road. As a migrant worker she traveled with her mother, father, brothers, and sisters to work in the fields in California. Sara was the first in her family to graduate from college when she received her bachelor's degree from Pan American University in May of 1972. Sara also went on to obtain her master's degree, also from Pan American University in August of 1975. In her time off, Sara enjoyed the simple life, which was watching movies. She often enjoyed funny movies and would laugh out loud after everyone in the room laughed, and she also enjoyed watching her Western movies. When she was not sitting crossed legged on the couch drinking a cold Dr Pepper watching TV, she was out walking the yard looking for green jays, tending to the horses, visiting her family, or riding around the in the pickup truck with her husband, Juan. Sara also enjoyed her time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grand child, always with a smile as they could do no wrong in her eyes. Sara was often the loudest one at any of her three sons’ San Benito Greyhound Football games. She would always encourage her grandchildren to do their best and loved to listen to their entertaining conversations. Sara was a strong woman of faith and an active member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. When she was able to attend church, it was always the 9:30 a.m. mass on Sunday morning or any other day of holy obligation. She also preached to her family to always have faith, pray, be strong, and no matter what, give thanks to God. She is preceded in death by her parents, Santiago “Jimmy” Abrego and Maria Consuelo “Nena” Luna Abrego; her brother, Joel Abrego; her son, John Andrew “Andy” Galarza; her in-laws, Leon “El Colorado” Galarza and Maria Isabel “Chavela” Galarza; her brother in-law, Guillermo Galarza; her brother in-law, Armando Galarza; her sister in-law, Maria Cervantes; and her brother in-law, Manuel Garza. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Juan Galarza; her sons, Eric (Denise) Galarza and Joseph Nicholas (Julie) Galarza; her brothers, Santiago “Jimmy” (Rebecca) Abrego, Jr. and Jesus “Jesse” (Leticia) Abrego; her sisters, Fidela A. Garza, Maria Elena (Bud) Black, and Reyes (Cipriano) Naranjo; her sister in-law, Josefina E. Abrego; 08 grandchildren, one great-grand child; several nephews, nieces, and other relatives.
