Please share a memory of Lucila to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lucila Eloisa Peña, 85, of Laguna Vista, Texas passed away Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas. Born August 15, 1937, in Edcouch Texas to parents Rafael Yarritu and Felecitas Hinojosa Yarritu. She was a loving sister to Tere Yarritu Gonzalez. She graduated from Edcouch Elsa High School in 1955 where she was a member of the marching band. Upon graduation from high school, Lucila attended Pan American College in Edinburg, Texas where she graduated in 1959. After college graduation, Lucila became a public-school teacher in McAllen, Texas which was the beginning of a journey where she impacted so many young children in the classroom. In 1963 Lucila met the love of her life Martin R. Pena, also a fellow teacher, and they soon married on August 30, 1964. Lucila and Martin started a family that would include 5 children Gabriel Pena (wife Raquel and daughter Sydney Jo), Palmira Lucila Chapa (husband Mario, children son Mario Jr., daughters Roxanne and Roseanne), Miguel Javier Pena (wife Michelle; sons, Zachary and Benjamin), Cecilia Carmela Pena (son Jose Angel Alvarado Jr., daughter Mariana Elena Alvarado) Roberto Rafael Pena (son Maddox Martin Pena and daughter Adriana Pena). Lucila was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother to Martin, their 5 children and 10 grandchildren. Lucila was not only an elementary teacher but also held the home together as she supported her loving husband Martin as he rose thru the ranks of Public Education where they both worked in several school districts and communities in the Rio Grande Valley. Once Lucila retired from teaching, she took up hobbies which included creating floral arrangements and baking plus the occasional trips with her husband to the casinos in Louisiana and Las Vegas. The Roman Catholic Church always was a big part of Lucila's life. Quite often her children would run downstairs and find their mom saying her morning prayers as she began her daily walk. Lucila attended mass as a member of Our lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and recently watched the TV Mass every Sunday morning. Lucila always placed her family first and the home was always so welcoming because of her. In later years, Lucila and Martin enjoyed time with the grandchildren and visiting with friends and family. Martin remained at Lucila's side as not only a loving husband but her daily care giver and provider. They both wanted it this way. It was an oath they both kept and never broke.
