Obituary of Fidel Calvillo

Please share a memory of Fidel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Fidel Calvillo, a lifelong resident of Port Isabel, TX, peacefully departed on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the age of 70 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Tx. Fidel was born on April 24, 1952, in Port Isabel, TX to parents Carmen and Maria Olivia Godoy Calvillo. He was the youngest of six and was a lifelong member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Port Isabel, TX. He married the love of his life Mavelia Gonzalez Calvillo on September 8,1972. The couple went on to have two children, Fidel Jesus and Marisa Calvillo. Growing up Fidel loved to surf at Tent City which is now known as Isla Blanca Park. He was a shrimper, where he served as a rig man under his older brother, Captain Pete Calvillo. After shrimping, he went on to work on the island near his beloved water when the island was in its infancy. He contributed to the development of the island in the construction of high risers as a foreman for a major and well-known construction company. Thereafter he went on to work on the “Le Mistral” cruise ship where he managed the casino and restaurant. Once again Fidel was on the water where he always found his comfort. Fidel was a hard worker and had many jobs he enjoyed. His final employment was as a security guard at Long Island Village where many of the residents admired his work ethics and would become great friends that kept in contact with him. He was an extraordinary man of many talents such as woodworking, carpentry, and among countless others, but his biggest talent was drawing. His greatest pride was a two-wall mural of Winnie the Pooh he painted for his first grandchild, Olivia. His artistic creativity could also be seen through his spirited holiday decorating, especially during Christmas, Fourth of July and Halloween. Fidel could also be recognized by his beachy straw “beret style” hat he would wear from his camping days on the flats to the days he spent at Isla Blanca Park. He also loved riding his bike on the beach and later went on to explore his inner biker with his three-wheeled Yamaha motorcycle on the hill countryside of Texas accompanied by his lifelong buddies, “The Rat Pack”. Fidel was a great friend to many and a helping hand to all. He was larger than life, the life of the party, loved to dance and always loved clowning around and acting silly, a true Payaso. He loved surfing the ocean waves on his boogie board and loved to teach others how to body surf and boogie board as well, especially, his only son, Fidel, and then his three grandchildren, Olivia, Stevie and Jojo who were the biggest pride and joy of his life. Fidel also enjoyed teaching all of his many talents and skills to his beloved grandchildren. His grandchildren were the center of his world. He enjoyed supporting their many individual sports interests and was extremely proud of them. Fidel is preceded in death by his father, Carmen Calvillo; mother, Maria Olivia Godoy Calvillo; sisters, Monica Ochoa Cisneros, Maria LoBou, Aurora Calvillo Ragusin; brothers, Carlos Calvillo, Pedro (Pete) Calvillo and in laws, Antonio (Tony) Z. Soliz; grandsons, Steven A (Stevie) and Joseph M (Jojo) Martinez; sister, Alicia Calvillo Martinez; brother in law, Andy (Rose), Pichie, Alex (Monda), Tutu (Nancy) and sister in law Mary Jane (Jesse), and many nephews and nieces along with his lifelong friends, Arnold and Melanie Martinez, David and Vicky Garza, Pepe and Anita Ramirez, Casimiro Martinez Jr, Johnny and Emma Ruiz and many others too long to list.
