Obituary of Margarita Barrera

Our beloved mother and grandmother entered eternal rest on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the age of 82. She was born on April 26, 1939 in Hebbronville, TX to Jose and Corina Zuniga. She was the second of eight children. Margarita graduated from Hebbronville High School and went on to attend Texas A&I University where she received a bachelor’s degree in Business Education. She went on to teach 32 years for both the Port Isabel and Hebbronville school districts. It was while teaching in Port Isabel that she came to meet and marry Ruben A. Barrera. They went on to have two children, Rubina and Ruben. She was a woman who loved her family dearly and cherished spending time with them especially with her grandson, Ruben, who she adored with her whole heart. Margarita loved telling her stories and making those around her laugh. She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, loved watching the Tarpons play on Friday nights, enjoyed watching NBA basketball especially during playoff time, and cherished her family trips. Margarita is preceded in death by her husband, Ruben A. Barrera. Her parents Jose and Corina Zuniga as well as her in-laws Rafael and Margarita B. Barrera. She also is preceded by her siblings Teresa Villarreal and Jose Zuniga. Her brother and sister in-laws: Rafael Barrera, William and Enriqueta Barrera, Roberto and Angelica Barrera, Jose Damacio “Coche” Barrera, Ramiro and Adela Barrera, Gustavo Barrera, Thomas Davis, Phil Villarreal, Hector Rivera. She is survived by her two children, Rubina (David) Smith and Ruben A. Barrera, Jr. and her grandson, Ruben A. Barrera III; her sisters and brothers Antonia (Carlos) Gutierrez, Thelma (Angel) Martinez, Adriana Rivera, Alejandro (Diana) Zuniga, Rogelio (Sylvia) Zuniga; her sister-in -laws: Ernestina Barrera, Margaret B. Davis, Lucila Barrera and Ruth Barrera; along with numerous nephews and nieces and extended family. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, located at 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 705 S Longoria St, Port Isabel, TX . Interment will follow to Port Isabel City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Reynaldo Barrera, Ramiro Barrera, Craig Davis, Angel Martinez, Carlos Gutierrez, Hector Rivera. Dennis Sanchez and David Krummel will serve as honorary pall bearers.
