Benita “Benny” Hernandez, 54, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. She was born on July 16, 1967 in San Benito, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents, Fermin and Petra A. Hernandez; grandmother, Leonidez Castillo; aunt, Pat Alvarado; sister and brother-in-law, Magdalena and Jose Betancourt; and nephews, Guadalupe “Lupito” Hernandez and Jose “Joey” Bentancourt, Jr. She is survived by her sisters, San Juana (Juan Jesus) Torres, Gloria Hernandez, and Socorro Hernandez; brothers, Pastors Juan M. (Sylvia) Hernandez, Guadalupe (Liz) Hernandez, Sr. and Jose (Yvonne) Hernandez. She has numerous nieces, nephews, friends and relatives to treasure her memory. Benny was a kind soul and touched the lives of those she loved. She is remembered for always putting a smile on everyone’s face and making them laugh. She had a heart of gold and enjoyed the company of her loved ones. She loved watching the Dallas Cowboys and proudly wore her Cowboys jerseys and attire. She enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing, and playing chalupa. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph and Queen of the Universe Catholic Church and a person of strong faith. Benny was deeply loved by many and will be greatly missed, but her spirit will continue to shine through those whose lives she touched. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, TX. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1001 US-77 BUS, San Benito, TX with interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Juan M. Hernandez, Jr., Carlos Tamayo III, James Jaequez, Jose Hernandez, Jr., Nathan Sierra, Noe Betancourt, Angel Tovar, Carlos Tamayo IV. All individuals are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines by socially distancing a minimum space of 6 feet apart and face covers or masks are recommended.
