Obituary of Maria Teresa Ochoa

Maria Teresa "Tere" Ochoa, 68, of Port Isabel, TX, entered into eternal rest, on December 17, 2021, at Valley Regional Hospital in Brownsville, TX. Teresa was a lifetime resident of Port Isabel and a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Port Isabel. She was a member of the local chapter for Catholic Daughters of America. Teresa was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Juan and Carmen Garza. She was born August 13, 1953, and graduated from Port Isabel High School. She was the Homecoming Queen 1970-1971. She would go on to graduate from Pan American University in Brownsville, TX. She would later receive her masters in Bilingual Education from Texas A&I in Kingsville. She also received her certificate in Library Science from Sam Houston State University. She was a retired educator from Point Isabel ISD after 45 years. As an educator, she was passionate about reading, books, and her library. She loved working on her puzzles, and watching Wheel of Fortune. Her favorite phrase to say was, “If you’re bored, read a book.” She is preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Carmen Garza; mother and father-in-law, Maria and Benito Ochoa, Jr.; nephews, Carlo Garza and Justin Solis. She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Benito Ochoa, III; children, Benito “Bo” Ochoa IV (Jeanette Rocha) and Analaura Ochoa-Loera (Pedro), both of Port Isabel, TX; grandchildren, Pedro Jose Loera, III and Matias Benito James Loera: three sisters, Irma (Joe) Solis, Carmen (Norbeto) Floriano, and Marisa Garza; five brothers, Diego (Millie Martinez) Garza, Abraham (Dominga) Garza, Romulo (Esmeralda) Garza, Victor (Maria del Rosario) Garza, and Mark (Elida) Garza. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with the recitation of the Holy Rosary to begin at 7:00 p.m., at Port Isabel Event Center, 309 E. Railroad Street, Port Isabel, Texas. Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 22, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 705 S. Longoria St., Port Isabel, TX with cremation to follow in accordance with her wishes. Honored to serve as Mrs. Ochoa's pallbearers are Pedro Hernandez Loera Jr., Juan Diego Garza Jr., Charley Solis, Mark Garza, Jr., Whitman and Bodden, William Johnathan Bodden, Victor Hugo Garza, and Saul Ochoa. Honorary pallbearers will be Pedro “Tre”, Jose Loera, III, Alberto Vega, Moises Galvan, Joe Castillo, Eddie Martinez, Horacio Hinojosa, Juan Martinez, Baltazar Hinojosa , Desiderio Delgado Jr., Eddie Galvan, Charlie Castillo, Pedro Carlos Loera Sr., Catholic Daughters of America Court #2569 of Port Isabel, TX and the Class of 1971. Honored guests include Juan Rivas, Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., Morgan LaMantia, Adela Kowalski -Garza, and Juan Magallanes. All individuals are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines by socially distancing a minimum space of 6 feet apart and face covers or masks are recommended.
