Please share a memory of Maria del Socorro to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Maria del Socorro Garza Ham, born in Port Isabel, Texas on March 26, 1944 entered into her eternal rest on September 26, 2021 surrounded by her loving family in Austin, Texas. Socorro was preceded in death by her parents, Roque and Veronica Garza, her brothers Manuel, David and Juan Garza and sisters Celia “Sally” Tabbott and Paula Cruz, and by her beloved son, Luis Ham (Telissa). She is survived by her children: Sandra Vice (Jeff), Lorena Heideman (Gary), Bilen Ham Jr. (Heidi), Brenda de la Garza (Joey), Michael Ham (Laura) and 10 grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers Guadalupe Garza, Roque Garza Jr, Victor Garza and sisters Sara Campos, Maria Catalina “Katie” Calderon, and Herminia “Mickey” Lara. She is also survived by her stepmother, Socorro Garza. Socorro was an active member of Lighthouse Assembly of God and enjoyed being a part of the Women’s Ministries and Sunday School classes. Known as a “Mom” to many who knew her, Socorro’s heart led her to financially support several children in third world countries for decades. In 1999, she moved to Austin, Texas to be near her children and grandchildren. She was happiest when her home was filled with family, music and laughter; she passed on many traditions to her children and grandchildren like tamaladas at Christmastime and games of Chalupa at birthday celebrations. She was a master in the kitchen with recipes that were often emulated, but never duplicated; she enjoyed gardening and took pride in her prized roses and gardenias and passed down her love of reading to her family. A celebration of Socorro’s life, a public viewing and a rosary will be held at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home located at 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, Texas on Friday, October 1, 2021 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. with a 4 p.m. graveside interment service officiated by Pastor Steven Hyde to follow at the Port Isabel City Cemetery. With honor and love for Socorro, the following will serve as pallbearers: Bilen Ham Jr, Michael Ham, Mario Ham, Joey de la Garza, Joshua Heideman, Kenneth Vice and Nicholas Ham. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Austin (https://www.hospiceaustin.org/) or the charity of your choice. All individuals are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines by socially distancing a minimum space of 6 feet apart and must wear face covers or masks.
