Obituary of Jose H. Compean

Please share a memory of Jose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jose (Joe) H. Compean April 22, 1960 – March 8, 2021 Jose (Joe) Compean went home to be with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, on March 8, 2021, after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. His belief in God and devotion to family supported him through this struggle and ultimately gave him peace. Joe was born in Port Isabel, Texas, to Hilario and Graciela Compean, and was lifetime resident of San Benito, Texas and dedicated Greyhound fan. He graduated from San Benito High School in 1978, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin. Joe spent his career as an educator and social worker for the State of Texas, where he diligently advocated for those that he served. Joe was a dedicated son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend. He took pride in witnessing the accomplishments of his nieces and nephews as they grew into adulthood, and encouraged them to seek the Lord and education. There was never a dull moment with Joe, as he brought so much happiness and laughter to all those around him. He always looked forward to football and baseball seasons to support the San Benito Greyhounds and Lady Hounds, never missing a home game, and often traveling with siblings across the state to see their play-off games. Joe’s favorite time of year was Christmas. He was a pro at decorating the annual Compean Family Christmas Tree, and always made sure that each family member received a special gift from him. He especially looked forward to the annual Compean Family Christmas-Eve dinner always filled with joy, laughter, food and music. He had a passion for gardening and taking good care of his rescued animals. His yard was always blooming with beautiful flowers and his beloved pets. Although he suffered from a long and difficult illness, his faith was always strong. He loved to pray, and did so until the very end. We take comfort in knowing that he is not in pain anymore, and is walking and rejoicing with or Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. Upon keeping the faith, we will join him some day. Left to treasure Joe’s life are his parents, Hilario and Graciela Compean; his brother, Juan Compean; his sisters, Ednedina (Eleuterio) Martinez, Gracie (Jerry+) Mata, Mary (Amos+), Guzman, Rebecca (Israel) Compean, his cousin/brother, Ruben Ramirez; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved with all of his heart. Joe’s family will receive relatives and friends for visitation on Friday, March 12, 2021, from 5 p.m., until 9 p.m., with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at 7 p.m., at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home. A Catholic Burial will take place at Mont Meta Memorial Park on Saturday, March 13, at 10 a.m. You may sign the online guestbook and send words of comfort, flowers, or sympathy cards to the family of Jose H. Compean at www.thomaegarza.com. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors and Crematorium, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, Texas, (956) 399-1331.
