Obituary of Nancy Chilton Henderson

Nancy Chilton Henderson, 87, of Laguna Vista, TX went to meet her savior on December 26, 2020. She leaves behind her husband of 64 years, Jefferson S. Henderson II. Nancy is also survived by two children, son Jefferson S. Henderson III (Sheri) from Jupiter, FL and daughter Alice Henderson Hall (Darryl Hopkins), and granddaughter, Sarah Hall, and a great grandson, Casey Ray, from Statesboro, GA. She has one brother, Carl S. Chilton Jr. who lived in Brownsville TX until recently when he moved to live with his daughter in Rockwell, TX. Nancy was born in Harlingen TX on February 14, 1933 to Carl S. Chilton Sr. and Eula Kell Chilton. Her father was a school superintendent and her mother an elementary school teacher. The family lived in Port Isabel, TX during her early childhood and then moved to Port Lavaca, TX where Nancy graduated from high school. Nancy attended the University of Texas in Austin, TX and majored in Home Economics Education. Her first teaching job was in Bandera, TX where she taught for two years. While at UT, she met Jeff at the Wesley Foundation and they were married in Port Lavaca on June 30, 1954. Nancy taught Home Economics in Austin at Fulmore Junior High while Jeff finished his master’s at UT. Then they moved to New Orleans where Jeff III was born and next to San Antonio where Alice was born. In 1962, the four Henderson’s moved to the suburbs of Washington DC where Nancy lived for most of her adult life. She began teaching Home Economics again in 1967 in Fairfax County Public schools. She retired in 1994 as the Department Chair at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax. She was a popular and loved teacher who also advised the Future Homemakers of America (FHA) Club and the Student Government Association. She was on the National Board of Directors for FHA for six years and Chair of the board for two years. While teaching, she was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma an international society for woman educators. Nancy was a devout member of the United Methodist Church. Wherever she lived, she joined a Methodist church and served in numerous volunteer leadership roles within the church, at the district level, and with the Virginia Annual Conference. She also taught adult Sunday School and served on the Board of Directors of Children and Family Services for the Virginia United Methodist Conference. Nancy helped start a storefront church in Northern Virginia. After years of volunteer work with the United Methodist Church, she and Jeff took a part time paid position in 2001 titled Director of Membership Development with Christ Church in Fairfax Station, VA. Recently, they attended First United Methodist Church. Port Isabel, TX. In addition to her church work Nancy was involved with P.E.O an organization of women, by women, and for women in Virginia and Texas. Jeff and Nancy loved to travel. The family always took family vacations within the US and overseas. They loved St. Thomas USVI and went there to celebrate their wedding anniversary for many years. After they retired, they were always planning their next big trip. Even though, Nancy lived most of her life in Fairfax, Virginia her roots in the Rio Grande Valley were strong. Her parents had retired to Brownsville TX and lived there until their death. In 1995, She and Jeff bought a condo on South Padre Island. They spent many years being Winter Texans in January and February until they decided to move to the valley permanently in 2016. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church, 101 W. Adams St., P.O. Box 1085 Port Isabel, TX 78578. Due to current restrictions, this establishment will follow the 25% occupancy limit and all persons shall institute social distancing of a minimum space of 6 feet apart. All individuals must wear face coverings or masks. (May include bandanas or sewn or cloth face coverings). A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at 2:30 p.m. at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens 4464 Old Port Isabel Rd Brownsville, Texas.
