Obituary of Juan Berrios Rivas

Juan Berrios Rivas, better known to most as “Sammy” or “Samuel”, of Brownsville, TX, passed away on December 18, 2020 at his home in Brownsville. Samuel was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Miguel Berrios and Maria Rivas on October 20, 1932. He went to Baldorioty de Castro High School and graduated in 1950. Samuel then moved to New York City for several years and worked for a clothing manufacturer. Upon his return to Puerto Rico, he joined the US Army in 1954 during the Korean War and was stationed in Fort Hood, TX. Samuel was honorably discharged in 1956 after his military commitment. After the military, Samuel earned an Associate Degree in Accounting and worked for Manuel San Juan Insurance Company and then with Avon Products. He went on to retired from Avon and then rejoined the military through the Puerto Rico Air National Guard. He retired from the military after 20 years of proud and successful military service. Samuel and his wife Lucy moved to Brownsville, TX in 2000 to be closer to their daughter Yolanda and her family. Samuel’s passion for life, his sense of humor, ability to befriend anyone he met, and his love for his family were known to everyone that knew him. He loved to cook, dance, and was a proud Puerto Rican. Juan is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Luz Maria Vazquez de Berrios, Sons: Samuel (Margarita) Berrios, Juan Ramon (Lissie) Berrios, and Daughter: Yolanda (Dr. Jose) Ayala, Granddaughters: Jennifer Andrew, Stephanie Roorda, Elizabeth Ayala, Melissa Berrios, Nathalie Ayala, Greatgrandchildren: Kason Roorda, Avery Andrew, Kieran Roorda, Mikaela Andrew, Sisters: Luisa Berrios, and Alicia Berrios. He is preceded in death by his Parents: Miguel Berrios and Maria Rivas, Sister: Ana Picon, Brothers: Miguel Berrios and Manuel Berrios. Services and burial plans will be announced at a later date. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Ana Maria Jochola, Ana Julia Diaz, Margie Divin, Johnny Torres, and Abraham Avila for their care, support and friendship for Samuel.
