Alfonso “Poncho” Gonzalez Sr., 94 of Port Isabel, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was a lifetime resident of Port Isabel, lifetime member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, and an avid Tarpon fan. Poncho worked for the City of Port Isabel, later known as the Laguna Madre Water District, for 45 years when he retired as a foreman in 1993. He enjoyed playing baseball, shooting pool, and dancing. He is preceded in death by his wife, Enriqueta Garza Gonzalez; grandson, Abraham Martinez; granddaughter, Criselda Alamo; five brothers; one sister; and son-in-law, Ramiro Martinez. Poncho is survived by his children, Rosalinda (Abel) Gonzalez, Alfonso Gonzalez, Hermelinda Martinez; Enriqueta (Antonio) Alamo, Enedina (Gerardo) Alamo; and Sulema (Lenny) Everding; 42 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. A viewing will begin on Thursday, May 7, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas. A catholic mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2020, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 606 W Ocean Blvd, Los Fresnos, TX 78566, with cremation to follow. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Abel Gonzalez, Alfonso Gonzalez III, Venustiano “Tuffy” Martinez, Gerardo Alamo Jr., Antonio Alamo III, and Sabino Hernandez Jr. Due to current restrictions, this establishment will follow the 25% occupancy limit of 50 persons or less and all persons shall institute social distancing of a minimum space of 6 feet apart. All individuals must wear face coverings or masks.
