Maria Ybarra was born in Guanajuato, Mexico on 11/12/1912. Maria has lived most of her life in San Benito, Texas.  Maria passed away on Friday June 1, 2018 peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.  Maria celebrated her 105th birthday this past November with her family which included her living children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.  Maria has lived a very full life she has seen many changes in her life, she has lived through 18 different Presidents, she even received birthday wishes from past President Barack and Michelle Obama on her 100th and 104th birthdays.  Maria, leaves a beautiful legacy for her future generations, she has instilled in her children and grandchildren the strong love of God, to always keep Faith, and most importantly the love of family.

Maria would love to talk story of her past youth and how hard she worked as a child and her love of singing. As a child, one of the workers in the camps where she worked along with her parents, he would ask her to please sing for him and he would pay her as she sang along while they worked.  In her younger days she would take pride in her garden and loved her Roses.  She enjoyed when her children and grandchildren would come to visit, and either take her to get a “Vanilla Soft Serve Cone” or a Raspa de Leche.  She also enjoyed when they would go across the border and would request someone to bring her “tacos de Cabrito”.

*Maria has been an influence in all our lives and the lives of her friends and community.  The fact that she has lived 105 years, practicing the same habits steadfastly, is just a small part of her larger than life persona.  It is the way she thinks, acts and speaks that was so full of life and lessons.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Fortino H. Ybarra; sons Martin and his wife Delia, Victor, Jose, and Juan; grandchildren: Hector Cortez Sr., Arnoldo Ybarra, Amanda Ybarra Smith, Martin Jr., and Miguel; and great-grandchildren Hector Cortez Jr and Christina Rae Salazar.
