Obituary of Roberto Garcia Martinez

Roberto “Robert” Garcia Martinez Jr. entered to eternal rest on Saturday, June 17th at the age of 66.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Roberto Morales Martinez and Enriqueta Garcia Martinez.

 He is survived by his children, Roldan Martinez, Orlan Martinez, Robert John Martinez, and Mya Martinez. His two grandchildren, Adrian Martinez and Briana Alyxa Longoria. His siblings, Ruben Martinez and Elvira Martinez.

Robert was born in San Benito and raised in Olmito. He graduated from Los Fresnos High School in 1969 where he played football as a fullback and as a linebacker or “monster man” football as he liked to call it. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Spanish from The University of Texas Pan American.

Robert taught Biology, coached football and track at San Benito High School. He was a business entrepreneur and owned several businesses throughout San Benito and Harlingen. One of his most treasured businesses was his family owned and operated Schvab’s Jewelers in Harlingen where he was a certified jeweler and certified diamond grader. 

In the last years of his life, he enjoyed his retirement in Olmito where he spent his last days. He was known to his family and friends for his strong character and his sense of humor and he will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., at Thomae Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in San Benito, Texas; in accordance to his wishes, cremation will follow.
